The Mexican army defeated the Texian forces outside Coleto Creek taking them as prisoners of war. Most of them were massacred by General Urrea's troops including Colonel Fannin, the last to be executed. The massacre outraged the population of the Republic of Texas and "Remember Goliad!" became a rallying cry for the Texian army.

Did You Know...?
The Texians willingly marched back to Goliad after surrendering to General Urrea. They all believed that they would be held in captivity for a few weeks before being released. Santa Anna sent the orders for their execution, but Urrea was uncomfortable with this solution. However, he could choose to obey his commanding officer or become a fugitive from the Mexican army. He chose to obey and opened fire. Twenty-eight Texians actually survived the massacre by different means including feigning death. Three of these survivors joined Houston's army.
